After a terrible fire swept through Detroit in 1805,
Father Gabriel Richard wrote
Detroit’s motto:
“Speramus meliora; resurget cineribus,”
(We hope for better things; it shall arise from the ashes.)

Detroit has a history of burn and build, rise and fall,
growth and decay. In 2009, Time magazine announced
"The Tragedy of Detroit"and sent reporters to
record the death of a once great city.
In 2022, Time magazine declared
Detroit one of the World's Greatest Places.
What happened between 2009 and 2022?
